About our glass painting courses

  • We teach you the techniques. This means you learn the fundamental skills and can then develop these however you choose.
  • Your course has a maximum of six people on it - unlike other painting courses with nine or more: how can a large group be good for you? Our small groups mean you get individual attention.
  • Better than that, there are two of us around at all times, so you’ll always get the personal attention you really need. There’s no waiting for the “tutor” to get free from the queue of other people he must see before he sees you. We’re always on hand.
  • In other words ... there is 1 of us to 3 of you: where else will you get that kind of attention?
  • We concentrate on painting with you, so no lead-work or glass-cutting is involved. This means you’ll improve your glass painting at an astonishing pace!
  • We supply lovely designs and cartoons for you to copy. This is all part of concentrating on techniques. You’ll have plenty of time later on to invent things for yourself! Together we’ll pick designs that you’ll love and which will also move you on. We have a huge number of designs for you to choose from, such as medieval heads, ornamental quarries, animals, and decorative borders.
  • We prepare the painting course afresh each time. Each course is different. This means you get a painting course that’s exactly right for you.
  • We have vast experience of painting and of teaching. With us, you get the best.
  • The studio and the countryside are lovely!

Does that all sound perfect? Come on one of our glass painting courses and you’ll learn a lot.

“The course was an excellent introduction to glass painting in a wonderfully interesting studio (Stephen C., Shropshire)

“Thank you both so very much for a very informative and instructive glass painting course” (Pam D., Suffolk)

“I enjoyed the workshop more than any other than I have attended. You are both gentlemen and damn fine teachers!” (Patrick G., Falkirk)

Glass painting course at Williams & Byrne“Warm gratitude to both of you for an extraordinary and delightful weekend of hands-on and intense individualised tuition. I came away bubbling with new skills, ideas and enthusiasm” (Philip E., Hertfordshire)

“The techniques we covered will be a huge step in my development to further my painting skills” (Julian P., Australia)

“Thank you both for a truly educational and inspiring weekend (Joyce T., West Lothian)

Here are some other things that you’ll want to know.

“What kinds of things do you teach?”

That largely depends on you. But we expect to teach you:

  • Painted glass ready to be firedHow to trace lovely fine lines.
  • How to create marvellous and evocative shadows.
  • We’ll show how much you can achieve while the paint is still wet.
  • And what to do after the paint is dry: beautiful effects!
  • You’ll paint on the front and the back of the glass and fire just once.
  • You’ll learn how to fire glass.
  • And how to mix paint properly!
  • You may also learn about how to use silver-stain: we have a special technique that we demonstrated on national television!

Other studios won’t teach you what we will, that’s for sure!

“I just wanted to thank you for a wonderful course — you have great vision and I hope you continue to blossom!” (Pauline L., Essex)

“It was great to meet you both and learn new skills!” (Pip F., Suffolk)

Even if you’ve done some or all of these things before, we know you’ll learn more from us.

“Since completing the course my confidence and methodology in glass painting has greatly improved” (Michael H., Lancashire)

And, if some or all of these things are new, the way we teach will give you the grounding that you need to take your painting forward.

“It is one thing to be able to paint beautifully and skillfully and ‘have the touch’ but to be able to show others at different levels and help them understand how the medium works is quite another. I think you both balanced it perfectly as no-one I believe could have felt unattended ...” (Sarah L., Cheshire)

“The course was excellent in every respect (Richard C., Milton Keynes)

“A lovely weekend (Clare W., Birmingham)

“What about tools, paints and brushes?”

We look after everything for you! We want you to concentrate on your painting: please don’t think about anything else. Brushes, paint, light-boxes, aprons: everything you need is here for you to use as you need.

“You can’t imagine how relaxing it was not to have to bring anything by way of materials and to find that everything that one could possibly require was already to hand. AND to feel confident that all the stage-by-stage processes and the teaching of them had been so thoroughly prepared.” (Cleone A., Wolverhampton)

“Shall I bring my own glass?”

You can if you want to but everything is included in the price. And we don’t fob you off with leftovers: you’ll use the same hand-made English, French and German glass that we use to do our very own beautiful glass painting.

“Thank you very much for a lovely weekend glass painting. I really enjoyed everything about the weekend from the one-to-one tuition and the friendly atmosphere to the food and the excellent supply of tea!” (Lesley H., Shropshire)

“I so enjoyed the weekend. Such a lovely working atmosphere, and the ‘bestest’ thing is that the awful fog of not knowing has evaporated SO much (Wenna C., Devon)

“Can I raise questions of my own?”

We expect you to! This isn’t an automated production line; it’s a glass painting course that is designed with you in mind. We change the course to suit who’s coming.

“A brilliantly pleasurable and informative and funny weekend” (Anne B., Gloucestershire)

“I’ve come back FULL of ideas! ” (Erica R., Midlands)

“I would like to thank you both for making it a memorable weekend for me. I had a wonderful time” (Shelja S., Hertfordshire, England)

“Will I be ‘good’ enough?”

What does this mean? — We don’t make artistic or aesthetic judgments! We teach you how to paint on glass. That’s all we care about. We trust that, like our other students, you’ll have a great time with us.

“No one I believe could have felt unattended or that their work was not of a good ability” (Sarah L., Cheshire)

You do not need to know how to cut glass or lead up for these courses, because no lead work is involved.

Nor do we say that you need to be “arty”. Nor do you need to be able to paint or to draw. Many pieces on this page were painted by people who (as they would have said before) could not “paint” or “draw”.

Rather, you do need to enjoy working with colour and light.

It’s also very important that you really want to come and learn to paint with us.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the glass painting course with you. Many thanks” (Roy A., Worcestershire)

You can ring us now on +44 (0) 1584 856724 and ask us your own questions.

“I learned more in that one weekend than I thought possible ...” (Joyce T., West Lothian)

“ ... so much attention and guidance ... such inspirational teachers” (Kathryn W., Salisbury, England)

“What happens when I’ve left you?”

Going on past experience, we’ll regard one another as friends to keep in touch with. We’ll continue to advise and help you as best we can – by e-mail or telephone. There’s also our online stained glass studio where you can download chapters of our book and read free newsletters.

“Many thanks for being so accessible after the course. I realise that the help and assistance you have afforded me only confirms my thoughts that you are truly passionate about the work you do” (Clive P., Herefordshire)

“Do I get time to eat, drink and sleep?”

Just about. But don’t be surprised if time flies by when you’re with us! We pack every moment with something great for you to do.

“Your enthusiasm for stained glass is infectious and extremely motivational (Michael H., Lancashire)

“Thanks for a great weekend. It went far too quickly” (Caroline M., Kent)

“When do you run your courses?”

Normally just 4 times a year. We want to pass on our knowledge at the same time as continuing to design, paint and restore for our clients. The next glass painting courses are coming up: email us for dates and tell us what you want to learn.

All courses last an intensive weekend, starting at 9.15 and finishing around 5 on both days.

“I had a splendid weekend. You are both excellent teachers and made the whole experience extremely pleasurable” (Lis C., Cheshire)

We provide lunch and refreshments both days, but you probably won’t want to leave your light-boxes for very long.

“The course was absolutely right for me (Clive P., Herefordshire)

Ring us now on +44 (0) 1584 856724. Places go fast. Dates for 2008 are coming up below.

“Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the stained glass painting course ... and thank you for your excellent tuition. I drove away at the end of the course on Sunday with my head buzzing with ideas on how to apply the techniques I had learnt” (Sara B., Shropshire)

“Thoroughly enjoyable, and for me personally a great learning curve as I doubted if I was artistic enough to do it. It has increased my confidence immensely and I am really looking forward to adding the next dimension to my glass work and experimenting with the paint” (Martin P., West Berkshire, England)

Every place always goes; everyone who comes is ALWAYS thrilled.

Remember: we take no more than 6 people at a time.

Also remember there are 2 of us to teach, and a small group of just 6 of you: that’s how seriously we take your wish to paint on glass.

Interested in 2009? You’re in good company. Please e-mail us NOW.

We’ll want to talk with YOU: it’s all part of making sure you get the glass painting course that’s right for you. Please read this:

“ ... the fact that you take the time beforehand to find out the individual’s needs means that all of my topics were covered; and even though I say it myself I am pleased with my progress!” (Clive P., Herefordshire)

Terms and conditions apply: please see below.

“How much does your glass painting course cost?”

The cost for weekend courses during 2008 is £275 per person (this includes VAT at 17.5%). This is for:

  • Tuition in groups of no more than 6.
  • 2 of us to teach and work with you - in effect, each “group” is thus no more than 3!
  • Use of our tools, kiln and brushes.
  • All glass and other materials.
  • We run a course that’s designed freshly for you.
  • Food and refreshments throughout the 2 days.

With us, it’s like going to a tailor and being measured. Not at all like other glass painting courses where one size is meant to fit all: that’s not our style.

Are other glass painting courses cheaper? Yes, certainly.

Consider this: would you rather go somewhere else and spend £250 on a 2-day course with 8 people on it and just 1 teacher? Or £275 on our course with (at most) 6 people on it and 2 of us to teach and guide you with beautiful glass etc. included in the price?

Also, our course is re-designed each time it’s run.

On top of everything, we are a really successful studio: we teach you because we want to.

“The teaching took us through techniques and skills that would have potentially involved months of trial and error. A great weekend” (Stephen C., Shropshire)

All you have to do is send us your fee when you want to book: £275. (This includes VAT at the prevailing rate of 17.5%.) Please see our terms.

Terms

Our stained glass painting courses are special. Everyone who’s ever attended has had a fantastic time. Because we want to continue running small courses with 2 of us to work with you, we have these terms:

  • We need to know that the course is right for you: therefore we want to talk with you and find out what you want and need to know.
  • Your full payment IS your booking.
  • Because we run glass painting courses in such small groups, we reserve the right not to refund this fee if you cancel. And, if we do offer a refund, we reserve the right to charge a £100 cancellation fee to cover our administration costs.
  • Once you book, we cannot offer alternative dates.

Our terms exist to allow the 2 of us to continue teaching in small groups with our devoted attention to your wants and needs. You’ve seen the testimonials on this page: we have a lot to give you and, if you book, we want you to attend.

“You are both excellent teachers and as I suspected prior to my visit, you are both masters at running workshops which engage and adapt to the people there.” (Chloe U., Exeter, England)

Book now on +44 (0) 1584 856724.

“Can you also teach me one-to-one?”

We can indeed give you one-to-one stained glass instruction to cover various subjects of your choosing at the level that you require, for example, cartoon and water-colour techniques, methods of reinforcement, painting with nib and oil, toning with oil, tracing with chalk.

  • Our one-to-one stained glass instruction is tailored to your requirements.
  • We will all agree an agenda in advance.
  • The fee is £295 (including VAT at 17.5%) per working day including all materials and tools.
