“Finding your web site was a revelation” (Julia H. - Sussex, England)
See how we paint our gorgeous dog roses - we can show you exactly what we do
Flowers are lovely to look at – we love painting them on glass. The special thing about these dog roses is that they are always in bloom, whatever the season.
This is a photograph we took in a client’s house on the day after Christmas (he had invited us round for lunch). It was a cold, grey day. But these dog roses we’d made for him just lit up the room in a beautiful way.
We always begin with a lovely design. Note: only for May 2008, this design is one of the stained glass designs which can come as a valuable bonus with our book. (You choose which designs you want.)
The time you spend designing is always worth its weight in gold: painting on glass is too complicated simply to invent as you go along. We use water-colored paint to prepare most of our stained glass designs.
We use the design to prepare a “cut-line”. We also use the design to choose our glass. We mostly use handmade glass because it has such unique textures and depths of color. There’s every point in using the best glass you can find.
The colors don’t have to match exactly: never be too literal. You must always be thinking of where the stained glass panel is going to hang.
A technique that we teach you in our expert book is how to paint many layers of paint on top of one another in a single firing. It’s a fantastic method of painting: we usually fire our glass JUST ONCE. We will show you how.
Here we’ve covered every piece of glass with a very light tone of paint – this is something we show you in Chapter 2. Then we trace the outlines very, very lightly: it’s important to mix the paint as we show in Chapter 1, then trace as we show you in Chapter 4.
We let the paint dry thoroughly. Then we put the stained glass design on one side: we need to be able to see it, but the most important thing is to concentrate on the glass we’re painting.
Now we paint over the faint tracing lines a second time (and sometimes a third): you’ll find more about this in Chapter 4. We also begun to “flood” the darkest areas with the “silhouette” technique from Chapter 2.
So far we’ve darkened the glass by painting on it. The time has therefore come to let the light shine through! Here’s where we start to add highlights.
Look carefully at the leaves and petals: we’ve used sticks and needles to cut through the paint to the bare, bright glass beneath. On the background, we’ve used a brush to make small marks. We examine highlights in Chapter 5.
But we don’t just leave highlights as they are: it’s important that there are degrees of brightness (just as there are already degrees of darkness). So some of the highlights are “softened” with a brush or with your fingers.
It’s easy to ruin glass painting at this point: there’s a skill to highlighting. It’s particularly important not to rush. Just as you used the best glass, it’s essential to work thoughtfully.
We also paint with oil-based paint on top of the many layers of unfired water-based paint. This is an astonishing technique that we explain to you in Chapter 6.
We fire our glass at a fairly high temperature because we like the silk, smooth effect this gives. We usually go to 675 centigrade / 1250 Fahrenheit and “soak” the glass there for up to 5 minutes. On the way down, we anneal the glass so that its stresses are relieved.
Take note: this is all done in a single firing. Our book tells you how we do this.
And then it’s time to put away the brushes: it’s only once you’ve leaded and cemented the window that you can see what the stained glass window really looks like.
That’s just one sequence of stained glass painting techniques that we use at our studio. We pick and choose our techniques, depending on the project.
If you’re new to painting on glass, we can show you how you do it beautifully. If you already paint, our techniques will add to your skills. We care about how you paint: we’ll be glad to show you what we know.

- Why make unnecessary mistakes with badly mixed paint when we can show you how the experts mix their paint? (Hint: experts don’t mix one tablespoon at a time!)
